The Spalding Gentlemen’s Society Museum at 9 Broad Street, Spalding PE11 1TB is now open every Wednesday between 11am and 1pm.
Come and see the fascinating collection including this eighteenth century panoramic painted panel from High Bridge to Ayscoughfee Hall in Spalding.
The panel is in fact an oil painting on two oak boards butted together.
From left to right you can see the Bell Inn sign (London Road side), High Bridge, the Bull Inn sign, St. Mary and St. Nicholas Church, Holyrood House (formerly known as Gayton and Fairfax House) and Ayscoughfee Hall.
Recent research has established the painting to date between 1722 and 1785.
The panel is thought to have been in the society for approx 200 years and to have come from Ayscoughfee Hall.
After the recent cleaning by Hirst’s Conservation, the artists initials J.R. are visible in the bottom right hand corner.
