Fenland Studies – Villein Pedigrees

Posted by: Michael Gilbert Comments: 0

A sample document for the Fenland Studies section of the website  – below is a villein pedigree for the Dally family of Weston in Elloe from the fourteenth century. The original is taken from the Myntling Register held by Spalding Gentlemen Society and the translation is courtesy of Richard Gilbert of the University of Sheffield.

These documents were used by the Priors of Spalding to keep track of their serfs to make sure they paid any fines and carried out their labour duties. These are useful documents that help to understand the social structures in the region at that time.

Thanks to Spalding Gentlemen’s Society for permission to use the image.
