Louth Museum – Visit to Donington near Boston

Visit to Donington, near Boston

A guided visit to St Mary and the Holy Rood church, a chance to see displays, memorabilia and the new ledger slab for explorer Matthew Flinders; and a guided tour of Donington village.

Meet at Donington Church Hall PE11 4UA where tea and coffee will be provided and where there are toilets. We will then assemble in the church opposite where Jane Pearson, Chair of the Bring Him Home campaign will remind us of Flinders’ life and tell us a little more of the higher profile of the village since his re-interment. Jean Howard will guide the church which has numerous interesting memorials – tablets, ledgers and windows – and members will have the opportunity to view an exhibition about Flinders’ achievements.

We will eat our own picnic lunches using churchyard seating or the church pews depending on the weather, after which Jean Howard will lead a guided walk around the attractive village pointing out Flinders’ statue and school, listed buildings and businesses past and present. (Public toilets in Market Place.)

Please wear adequate footwear for the day. Total distance about 2 miles in easy stages.
